The Works of Arthur Thoby Prinsep

Arthur Thoby Prinsep was an author, poet, playwright, actor, composer, public speaker, music teacher and theatre director. He was also an early pioneer in Australian soccer, having played for Queen’s Park in Brisbane (1884), Wanderers, Canterbury and Arcardians (1885), Melbourne Rovers (1887-1890), Adamstoen Rosebuds (1893) and clubs in Dunedin and Wellington in New Zealand.

Prinsep’s life was colourful, sometimes to the point of scandalous, with many of the contemporary biographical writings containing exaggerations and downright fabrications.

However, Prinsep did leave behind a solid body of work from which we can judge his artistic career.

Below is a chronological list of his surviving works, with links to Trove. These pieces were  written under a number of names including Prinsep, and variations of F D C De Lisle.

Please note certain stories were syndicated among several newspapers, and published over several chapters. In this case the most complete version from a single publication will be used.

Fiction

The following stories are not listed date of composition. Stories appeared in multiple newspapers, often appearing in different combinations under different series titles, sometimes a few years after original publication. In fact it is difficult to ascertain when stories were published first as not all publications are on Trove or Past Papers.

The stories below have been listed in the order of the published date of the versions I have first found. At this stage I am not interested in re-ordering by searching for the earliest known publication.

Also I have chosen Trove (ie Australian) over Past Papers (NZ) versions where I can for ease of use.

"Winning A Certainty" by A. Prinnsep (sic), January 19, 1886, Globe (Sydney). (Trove)

"Lucifer" by A Prinsep, January 22, 1886, Globe (Sydney) (Trove) - may be non-fiction.

Series: “Tales of Sahib Land
These stories were published in Australia over 1905 and 1906. and were credited to by F D’A. C. De L’Isle.

All chapters appear in the Sydney newspaper The Arrow, unless otherwise indicated, due to scan quality.

Unlike the various Sports series (Tales of Colonial Sport, Tales of a Minor Sportsman etc), which seem to have been newspapers’ own compilations of Prinsep’s sports stories, Tales of Sahid Land seems to have been written as a formal series.

Songs and Music

“What Might Have Been” – Words by Author Princep, Music by Henry Walton. (Full score)

“Under The Silver Sea” – Words and music by Mr De Lisle.

Notes: this piece was referenced as a De Lisle Composition in November 1897. A handwritten scores of this composition is owned by one of Prinsep’s descendants, clearly stating De Lisle or Prinsep as the author.
I have only seen the first line of this handwritten score, but it is very similar to a song of the same name by Edward Mervyn, of which a full score exists on Trove. Mervyn’s piece was released by at least 1896.
Curiously enough, the Mervyn piece is advertised on the score of “What Might Have Been”. I can find no other information of references to Mervyn, meaning he might be another pseudonym, either of Prinsep or used by the publishing company. It cannot be proven whether Mervyn or Prinsep plagerised the work of the other.
Curiously enough, a short story “Over The Silver Sea” appeared in some smaller Australian newspapers in 1895. The story is not credited but the main character is Myra Dayne. Dayne is one of Prinsep’s stage names, which he has also used in fiction.
